One for the books today! Douglas joined me for an early morning fall session on the water, starting our Master the Basics: Fly Fishing Fundamentals Class with Around The Bend Fly Fishing. The crisp October air and calm conditions made for perfect learning weather as we launched into what would become a solid introduction to the fundamentals of fly fishing.

With our gear rigged and ready, we focused on drift fishing, bottom bouncing, and spinner fishing techniques throughout the morning. These river waters around Angola provide excellent opportunities for beginners to practice their casting and line control, with plenty of structure and current breaks that help new anglers understand how water flows affect their presentation. The combination of techniques gave Douglas hands-on experience with different approaches, and the steady conditions allowed us to work through each method systematically. We wrapped up the session with solid progress on his casting form and a much better understanding of reading the water.

End of winter report 

<div>this winter has had alot of drastic changes,&nbsp; with freezing and thawing&nbsp; happening throughout the winter .</div><div>the fish are there if you find the open water and hit it at the right time.</div><div>we have been finding some fresh fish , more so then drop backs . we need some good rain to break this ice up and make navigating the streams more realistic . beads under a float or any small presentation would perfect .</div>

The pristine winter wonderland of the upper New York river valleys is truly a sight to behold. As we set out for today's full-day walk and wade adventure, the chilly air and snow-covered landscape immediately captivated my senses. The tall, icy cliffs towering over the flowing river created an almost otherworldly ambiance, while the crisp, clear skies provided the perfect backdrop for us to immerse ourselves in this frozen wilderness.

With our gear secured and our guide rods at the ready, we began our trek through the rugged terrain, carefully navigating the snowy paths and rocky inclines. The sound of the rushing water and the crunch of the snow beneath our feet added to the invigorating energy that filled the air. As we reached the river's edge, the shimmering surface of the partially frozen waterway revealed its secrets, beckoning us to test our skills against the elusive trophy trout and steelhead lurking beneath the icy currents.

Utilizing the light tackle techniques that have proven so effective in these waters, we methodically worked the pools and riffles, our eyes scanning the water for any sign of a strike. The anticipation was palpable as we cast our lines, each of us hoping to be the first to hook into a true river monster. And when the moment finally came, the adrenaline surged through our veins as we felt the powerful tugs on the end of our lines, the fish putting up an incredible fight against the chilly current.

One by one, we managed to land some truly impressive specimens, each one a testament to the rich, fish-filled waters of this region. The sense of accomplishment was written all over our faces as we held up our catches, the snow-capped peaks and icy cliffs providing a breathtaking backdrop for our triumphant moments. The joy of these shared experiences, forged in the heart of nature's winter embrace, is what truly makes a day like this so special.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the snowy landscape, we reluctantly made our way back to the trailhead, our souls filled with the kind of deep contentment that only comes from a day well spent in pursuit of the ultimate prize. I recently took a trip down to Cattaraugus Creek, and I have to say, the smallmouth bass are really biting! The water conditions were just right, and we had a great day out on the water. We managed to catch quite a few smallies, with some of the larger ones tipping the scales at over 4 pounds. We were using a variety of fly patterns, but the most effective seemed to be a Clouser Minnow in a chartreuse and white color scheme.
