Smallmouth Bass: These bruisers are pound-for-pound some of the hardest fighting fish in freshwater. They love fast water and rocky bottoms, so we'll target them around current breaks and submerged structure. Smallies are known for their acrobatic fights, often leaping clear out of the water when hooked. They're most active in the warmer months, making them a perfect summer target when the water's low and clear.
Rainbow Trout: The darlings of the fly fishing world, rainbows are known for their stunning colors and spirited fights. These fish are opportunistic feeders, which means we can target them with a variety of techniques from dry fly fishing to nymphing. They're active year-round, but spring and fall often see the best hatches and most aggressive feeding behavior. There's nothing quite like the rush of watching a rainbow rise to sip your dry fly off the surface.
Steelhead Trout: If you're looking for the ultimate freshwater challenge, steelhead are it. These sea-run rainbow trout return to rivers to spawn, bringing their ocean-grown size and strength with them. Steelhead fishing is often a game of persistence, but when you hook into one, hold on tight! They're famous for blistering runs and aerial displays that'll test both your gear and your skills. Fall and early winter are prime time for steelhead, when the rivers fill with these chrome-bright beauties.
While we provide the essential gear, there are a few things you'll want to bring to make the most of your day. A good pair of polarized sunglasses is crucial – they'll cut the glare on the water and help you spot fish. Don't forget a hat and sunscreen, even on cloudy days. Layered clothing is key, as the weather can change quickly by the river. And if you've got a favorite lucky fishing hat or lucky flies, by all means, bring 'em along!
One of the most valuable skills you'll pick up on this trip is how to read the water. We'll show you how to identify feeding lanes, seams in the current, and those prime lies where big trout like to hold. You'll learn to spot the subtle signs of feeding fish, from dimples on the surface to flashes beneath. This knowledge will serve you well long after our trip, helping you become a more successful angler on any river you fish.
In fly fishing, presentation is everything. We'll spend time perfecting your drift, teaching you how to achieve that drag-free float that's so crucial to fooling wary trout. You'll learn about mending your line, managing slack, and how to adjust your technique for different currents and water types. These skills are the difference between occasionally catching fish and consistently bringing them to the net.
We're passionate about preserving the rivers we fish and the species we target. Throughout the day, we'll share tips on responsible angling practices, including proper catch-and-release techniques to ensure the fish you catch today will be there for future generations to enjoy. You'll gain a deeper appreciation for the delicate ecosystems that support these amazing fish and learn how you can help protect them.
For those looking to take their angling to the next level, we'll introduce you to some advanced techniques. Want to try your hand at Euro-nymphing? We'll show you the ropes. Curious about streamer fishing for aggressive trout? We'll cover that too. Our guides are always eager to share their knowledge and help you expand your fly fishing repertoire.

Rainbow trout are the freshwater cousins of steelhead, known for their colorful pink stripe and spotted backs. Most average 18-20 inches, though bigger ones aren't uncommon. They're feisty fighters that'll test your skills, especially on light tackle. You'll find rainbows in cool, clear streams and rivers year-round, but spring and fall are prime. They love hanging around riffles, pools, and undercut banks. Early mornings and evenings are usually best, when they're actively feeding on insects. Fly fishing is the classic approach, but spinners and small lures work great too. Nymphing under an indicator is deadly effective – try a Hare's Ear or Pheasant Tail in size 14-16. For dry fly action, match the hatch or go with an attractor pattern like a Stimulator. One local tip: Don't overlook small streamers. A olive Woolly Bugger stripped slowly through deep pools can tempt big rainbows, especially when the water's a bit off-color after rain. Whether you're after the challenge or just want to enjoy some beautiful fish in a gorgeous setting, rainbow trout are hard to beat.
Steelhead are the sea-run version of rainbow trout, spending a few years in the ocean before returning to freshwater to spawn. They're typically bigger than their freshwater cousins, averaging 24 inches but sometimes reaching 45 inches and 55 pounds. These powerful fish are prized for their acrobatic fights and long runs. You'll find steelhead in our local rivers from mid-fall through spring. They prefer cool, fast-moving water with plenty of cover like boulders and fallen trees. Fly fishing is popular, but drifting and plunking work well too. A 13.5-foot 7-weight Spey rod is ideal for swinging flies through likely runs. For the best shot at hooking one, try wet flies like the Skunk or Brad's Brat in sizes 6-8. Focus on tail-outs and seams where fast water meets slow. These fish can be finicky, so changing up your presentation is key. One trick: Try "waking" your fly on the surface – sometimes that triggers explosive strikes from aggressive steelhead. Whether you're after the thrill of the fight or some delicious table fare, steelhead offer an exciting challenge for anglers of all skill levels.
Smallmouth bass are scrappy fighters that punch above their weight. Most run 2-4 pounds, but they've got attitude to spare. These bronze beauties are known for their acrobatic leaps and hard pulls. You'll find smallies in clear, cool rivers with rocky or gravelly bottoms. They love structure – look for submerged logs, boulders, and drop-offs. Early morning and evening are prime times, especially in summer when they seek cooler depths during the day. Spring and fall are fantastic seasons for smallmouth. They're aggressive and feeding heavily as water temps are ideal. Soft plastics like tube jigs work great, but topwater action can be explosive. Try walking a Zara Spook across likely holding areas for heart-stopping strikes. One local secret: When the water's low and clear, downsize your lures and use light line. A 3-inch grub on a 1/8 oz jighead can outfish bigger offerings. Cast upstream and work it back with the current for a natural presentation. Whether you're after a day of fast action or hoping to tangle with a trophy bronzeback, smallmouth bass offer an exciting challenge in a beautiful setting.
