Lake Erie Watershed Fishing Reports

Your Cattaraugus Creek Fishing Experience

Around The Bend Fly Fishing is the perfect fly-fishing guide for those looking to explore and enjoy the serene beauty of Cattaraugus Creek. There’s no better place than here, with its pristine waters, stunning landscapes, and diverse range of fish species. With our expert knowledge of the area's waterways and fishing techniques, we can help you experience a truly memorable fly fishing adventure. The fishing report from Cattaraugus Creek has been exceptionally good this season, making it an ideal destination for avid anglers. Located in Western New York, it is home to a variety of fish species such as steelhead trout and smallmouth bass. Our experienced guides know exactly where to find them. We provide all necessary gear and equipment including waders, rods, reels, and flies so that you can have an enjoyable day on the water without any hassle.

We get these questions a lot. What time is best for wade fishing? What is the most popular fish caught in Lake Erie? What's the largest fish caught in Lake Erie? The optimal time for wade fishing largely depends on factors such as tide, water temperature, and fish feeding patterns, but generally, early morning or late afternoon to early evening are the most productive times. These periods coincide with the changing tides and reduced light conditions that often stimulate fish to feed more actively. As for Lake Erie, the most popular fish species caught is the walleye due to its abundance and delectable taste. Anglers also appreciate the challenge it presents as walleyes are known for their elusive behavior. The largest fish ever caught in Lake Erie is a massive lake sturgeon, which can grow up to several hundred pounds and measure several feet in length. While once abundant in the lake, sturgeon populations have drastically declined due to factors like overfishing, habitat loss, and pollution. However, conservation efforts are ongoing to restore their numbers and secure the future of these impressive prehistoric fish.

At Around The Bend Fly Fishing, we provide a range of exciting opportunities for anglers of all skill levels. Our offerings include Walk N Wade Trips, Fly Fishing Lessons, Guided Fly Fishing Trips, and 5-Day Fishing Trips. We specialize in targeting Smallmouth Bass, Rainbow Trout, and Steelhead Trout, and our experienced guides are dedicated to helping you make the most of your fishing experience. Whether you're a seasoned angler or just starting out, we have something to offer, and we're committed to providing you with the best possible fishing experience. So come join us and discover the joy of fly fishing!

Angola Fall Fly Fishing Basics: Douglas Masters Fundamentals fishing report coverpicture

October 26, 2025

Perfect October conditions fuel Douglas's fly fishing breakthrough!

One for the books today! Douglas joined me for an early morning fall session on the water, starting our Master the Basics: Fly Fishing Fundamentals Class with Around The Bend Fly Fishing. The crisp October air and calm conditions made for perfect learning weather as we launched into what would become a solid introduction to the fundamentals of fly fishing. With our gear rigged and ready, we focused on drift fishing, bottom bouncing, and spinner fishing techniques throughout the morning. These river waters around Angola provide excellent opportunities for beginners to practice their casting and line control, with plenty of structure and current breaks that help new anglers understand how water flows affect their presentation. The combination of techniques gave Douglas hands-on experience with different approaches, and the steady conditions allowed us to work through each method systematically. We wrapped up the session with solid progress on his casting form and a much better understanding of reading the water. If you're looking to get started with fly fishing or want to sharpen your fundamental skills, our Private Flyfishing 101 sessions offer the perfect opportunity to learn in a focused, one-on-one environment. The Master the Basics: Fly Fishing Fundamentals Class with Around The Bend Fly Fishing covers essential techniques like drift fishing, bottom bouncing, and spinner fishing that every angler needs in their toolkit. These Angola area waters provide ideal conditions for learning, with forgiving currents and plenty of opportunities to practice your casting and presentation. Whether you're completely new to fly fishing or looking to build confidence with your technique, our private instruction format ensures you get personalized attention and can progress at your own pace. Spring Trout Run: Steelhead & Rainbow Action at Cattaraugus Creek fishing report coverpicture

March 19, 2025

Cattaraugus Creek - Erie, NY River Report on 19th Mar, 2025

As spring takes hold, Cattaraugus Creek is showing signs of exciting multi-species action. The creek is seeing increased movement as native fish begin their spring spawn, creating a prime opportunity for anglers targeting both rainbow trout and steelhead trout. With water temperatures rising, steelhead are making their way upstream, offering excellent chances for anglers using egg patterns, nymphs, or streamers. At the same time, resident rainbow trout are actively feeding, creating a dynamic mix of species in the system. Conditions are ideal for both fly and spin fishing, with flows supporting productive drifts and solid hookups. As more fish enter the creek, expect action to improve in the coming weeks. Whether you’re targeting hard-fighting steelhead or aggressive rainbow trout, now is the time to hit the water and take advantage of this seasonal migration at Cattaraugus Creek!

Brown Brook River Report on 13th Feb, 2025

this winter has had alot of drastic changes,  with freezing and thawing  happening throughout the winter .
the fish are there if you find the open water and hit it at the right time.
we have been finding some fresh fish , more so then drop backs . we need some good rain to break this ice up and make navigating the streams more realistic . beads under a float or any small presentation would perfect .

Frozen Wilderness Trout Expedition - A Winter Wonderland Challenge fishing report coverpicture

Conquer the Frozen River Valleys in Pursuit of Trophy Trout and Steelhead

The pristine winter wonderland of the upper New York river valleys is truly a sight to behold. As we set out for today's full-day walk and wade adventure, the chilly air and snow-covered landscape immediately captivated my senses. The tall, icy cliffs towering over the flowing river created an almost otherworldly ambiance, while the crisp, clear skies provided the perfect backdrop for us to immerse ourselves in this frozen wilderness. With our gear secured and our guide rods at the ready, we began our trek through the rugged terrain, carefully navigating the snowy paths and rocky inclines. The sound of the rushing water and the crunch of the snow beneath our feet added to the invigorating energy that filled the air. As we reached the river's edge, the shimmering surface of the partially frozen waterway revealed its secrets, beckoning us to test our skills against the elusive trophy trout and steelhead lurking beneath the icy currents. Utilizing the light tackle techniques that have proven so effective in these waters, we methodically worked the pools and riffles, our eyes scanning the water for any sign of a strike. The anticipation was palpable as we cast our lines, each of us hoping to be the first to hook into a true river monster. And when the moment finally came, the adrenaline surged through our veins as we felt the powerful tugs on the end of our lines, the fish putting up an incredible fight against the chilly current. One by one, we managed to land some truly impressive specimens, each one a testament to the rich, fish-filled waters of this region. The sense of accomplishment was written all over our faces as we held up our catches, the snow-capped peaks and icy cliffs providing a breathtaking backdrop for our triumphant moments. The joy of these shared experiences, forged in the heart of nature's winter embrace, is what truly makes a day like this so special. As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the snowy landscape, we reluctantly made our way back to the trailhead, our souls filled with the kind of deep contentment that only comes from a day well spent in pursuit of the ultimate prize. If you're ready to challenge yourself against the elements and test your angling skills in a truly awe-inspiring setting, I would be honored to guide you on your next adventure through these magnificent river valleys. Give me a call, and let's start planning your next unforgettable fishing trip.

Cattaraugus Creek - Erie, NY River Report on 8th May, 2023

Hey there, this is Captain Tyler Hageman from Around The Bend Fly Fishing, and I've got an exciting report for all the anglers out there. I recently took a trip down to Cattaraugus Creek, and I have to say, the smallmouth bass are really biting! The water conditions were just right, and we had a great day out on the water. We managed to catch quite a few smallies, with some of the larger ones tipping the scales at over 4 pounds. We were using a variety of fly patterns, but the most effective seemed to be a Clouser Minnow in a chartreuse and white color scheme. If you're looking to get in on some great smallmouth bass action, then Cattaraugus Creek is definitely the place to be right now. So come on down and join us on the water, and let's catch some fish!
